The Offer
- DoorDash is offering their annual DashPass subscribers a free HBO Max with ads subscription which typically costs $99.99/year.
DashPass annual subscribers who want the ad-free HBO Max can upgrade for $10.99/month (instead of the regular $16.99).
Our Verdict
This won’t work for the free Chase DashPass benefit since that’s a partner plan which is excluded in the terms.
Nice freebie with DashPass annual plan which costs $96/year – it’s actually a few dollars cheaper to buy DashPass than to buy the $99.99 Max-with-ads subscription directly.

I was getting ready to sign up when I saw the caveat, “This won’t work for the free Chase DashPass benefitsince that’s a partner plan which is excluded in the terms.” I might sign up for free but not if I need to pay. I get sufficient content with my $2 a month Disney Plus and Hulu bundle. I had the $3 a month deal with Starz but no content worth paying $1. I got the Black Friday deal. I borrow DVDs from my local public library to avoid advertisements.

How are you getting $ for Hulu/Disney+? I got the .99 Hulu and D+ was an extra $2 over BF. Was there a better deal I missed?

Really useless for anyone that subscribed to HBO using an Amex deal. I think I saved like $50 on HBO through that and have another offer lined up in time for me to get another year at a discount. Can’t imagine paying for Dashpass only to watch something with ads.

ATM best deal I can think of is using Amex Plat to subscribe to Disney+, Hulu and Max bundle w/ ads for $17/month. That is if you are ok with some ads

Amex expects their customers to be wealthy enough to not mind a $700 annual fee, but also expects them to be frugal enough to not mind streaming with ads. Likewise, they expect you to be someone that splurges on fine hotels and resorts, but also commits to getting cheap grocery at Walmart. That’s some wild mental gymnastics they are doing over there.

That’s how they get you. For those that are actually wealthy and hates ads, they won’t use the subscriptions or won’t shop at Walmart. Or if they use the subscription, they’ll upgrade to the no ads, which brings more spend to Amex partners. Or they likely won’t even bother activating any of these, but still happy to pay the AF, so more $$$ for Amex.

I have never been able to make the Amex Plat make sense. You pay a very high AF for the privilege of getting a slight discount?
I have tried massaging the numbers in any way possible but I can never justify the AF of the Platinum.
Even the high SUB doesn’t counteract the high AF. I really don’t know why the card is pushed so heavily (even on this site).
And this is coming from someone who has enough spend for multiple CIP SUBs per year.

It all comes down to lifestyle.
Plat AF makes sense to me because the 695 AF becomes $55 after just using the streaming credits (240), airline credit (200), and Uber Cash (200). That remaining $55 is easily offset with Centurion lounge access, Marriott/Hilton Gold, Saks credits, etc. I don’t even need to use Walmart+, CLEAR, Equinox, or the hotel credit to come out ahead.
But if you don’t ever use Uber, for instance, then yes the AF becomes more difficult to justify.

The $99 all inclusive deal with no ads was worth it. I instantly dropped MAX when they decided to charge more for 4k, and so did many others. Now they’re scrambling to collab with Doordash and others to bring people back.

Imagine using any streaming service with ads in 2024. The people who think this is a good deal probably also think Paramount+ with ads is a good deal.

I don’t mind ads myself. My only issue is when it’s the same ads over and over. I don’t watch enough TV to warrant paying 2x or more for no ads. When I do the occasional binge, it’s nice to get the break to get up and walk around.

Seems this is a way to waste money. Dash Pass is useless . If you want HBO subscribe for a month and cancel. Repeat yearly .

Not everyone wants to spend a month binging TV. I subscribe yearly to HBO using deals. Watch a few hours here and there each month. But I agree that Dashpass is mostly useless. Wouldn’t pay for it but will take it free from Chase.

This! So many people shitting on streaming services with ads, but nobody talking about the utterly garbage and the total money grab nature of Dashpass. Doordash first added a gazillion fees on to their free service and now they dare to charge you an additional $100 a year just to take out some of those fees. Unless you’re somebody with limited mobility, Dashpass is an unfathomably stupid subscription. I’d rather gamble that money on 0DTE INTC puts than give these folks a single penny.
